LGBTQIA+ Orgs We’re Following
One of the important ways we celebrated Pride this year is supporting and uplifting the amazing work some of our 1% for the Planet partners/friends are doing. This is not an exhaustive list, but merely a starting point for orgs to keep an eye on!
Venture Out Project
The Venture Out Project (TVOP) was founded by Perry Cohen as a way to spread comfort, inspiration, and joy to others in the LGBTQIA+ community. TVOP provides such an important space in which LGBTQIA+ community members and their families can connect with each other and nature through overnight trips for all skill levels and through shorter “Queer Day” events.
OUT for Sustainability
OUT for Sustainability (Out4s) supports environmental justice and climate resilience “by and for the LGBTQ+ community” through. Their current focus is on their QReady Initiative a program that is dedicated to “‘Resilience Preparedness by and for LGBTQ+ communities’ that focuses on the needs of multiply-marginalized communities on the frontlines of climate injustice through partnerships and collaborations that honor their leadership in this work.”
Brave Trails
Brave Trails is a nonprofit organization that runs various outdoor leadership programs for LGBTQIA+ youth. The goal is to inspire the next generation of community activists and provide a safe, inclusive space for these kids to grow and feel empowered in. Brave Trails has served nearly 1500 participants from all 50 states in its 9 summers of operation.
Rock Steady Farms
Rock Steady is a LGBTQIA+ owned and operated co-op vegetable farm rooted in social justice, food access, and farmer training. This co-op provides needed safe space and representation for QTBIPOC farmers and serves as a great model for sustainable farming and land stewardship practices. The farm supports their Community Supported Agriculture initiative which bridges the gap between farmers and consumers. The CSA is a sliding scale system that helps the community get access to fresh, healthy vegetables.
While it’s great to learn about the amazing work all of these organizations do for the LGBTQIA+ community, we encourage you to take your activism a step further. In the Know, Do, Change framework, “Knowing” is merely the first step. We encourage you to continue through this framework and go “Do”. Many of these orgs accept volunteers and all of them accept donations ;)
